Patriot Rail, Operation Lifesaver of Pennsylvania and Scouting America Partner on Rail Safety, History and Career Exploration
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sept. 12, 2026 — Nearly 200 Scouts and family members boarded Patriot Rail’s Gettysburg Railway on Sept. 12 for a sold-out Scout Day Train event that combined rail safety education, railroad history and hands-on learning experiences.
The event was presented through a partnership between Patriot Rail’s Gettysburg Railway, Operation Lifesaver of Pennsylvania and Scouting America’s New Birth of Freedom Council, providing participants with a firsthand look at the railroad industry while reinforcing the importance of rail safety.
Scouts participated in a 90-minute excursion aboard Gettysburg Railway, explored locomotive and equipment displays, engaged in Railroading Merit Badge activities and learned about railroad operations from industry professionals.
“Scouting is about giving young people opportunities to discover what interests them and what they’re capable of,” said Brian DeBease, Assistant Scout Executive & COO, New Birth of Freedom Council. “Scout Day Train is a great example. These Scouts get to experience railroading firsthand, learn important safety skills and work toward a merit badge while having an adventure with their families and friends. There is always something new to discover in Scouting.”
Operation Lifesaver of Pennsylvania delivered rail safety programming focused on grade crossing safety, trespass prevention, train stopping distances and the importance of remaining alert around railroad tracks and trains. Scouts and their families also participated in interactive educational exhibits designed to promote safe behavior around railroad environments.
“Education is one of the most effective tools we have to prevent railroad-related tragedies,” said Brock Kerchner, State Coordinator for Operation Lifesaver of Pennsylvania. “By partnering with Patriot Rail’s Scout Day Train, we’re able to connect directly with young people and reinforce lifesaving lessons about staying safe around railroad tracks and trains.”
The event also highlighted the role railroads play in connecting communities, supporting economic development and strengthening supply chains. Participants learned how freight rail transportation moves essential goods across the country, expands market access for businesses and supports critical industries throughout the region.
“Railroads are essential to keeping our economy moving, and the future of our industry depends on educating and inspiring the next generation,” said Bill Huston, Regional Operations Manager for Patriot Rail. “The Scout Day Train gave young people a firsthand look at how railroads connect communities, support supply chains and create rewarding career opportunities. We were proud to partner with Scouting America and Operation Lifesaver to provide an experience that combined education, safety and adventure.”
Throughout the event, Scouts interacted with railroad employees and industry representatives, toured railroad equipment and experienced railroading from a unique perspective. The program introduced participants to potential career paths in transportation, logistics, engineering, mechanical trades and railroad operations. The successful event reflected Patriot Rail’s ongoing commitment to rail safety education, community engagement and workforce development through partnerships that connect people to the railroad industry.
